Phantom Blade Zero Changing Difficulty

Quick Answer

Yes, Phantom Blade Zero supports adjustable difficulty. However, in an October hands-on demo, lowering the setting to Easy prevented the player from raising it again for the rest of that session. Do not assume that switching down is reversible.

Do not assume that switching down is reversible. The complete release-build switching rules remain unverified as of October 23, 2026.

The ordinary difficulty choices

Wayfarer, Pathbreaker, and Hellwalker are the ordinary difficulty options. Wayfarer is the easier, story-focused choice; Pathbreaker is the default described in October previews; Hellwalker uses more demanding enemy behavior.

The ordinary difficulty choices appear alongside the separately unlocked Sixty-Six Days challenge.

A lower setting can help you continue when a fight stops your progress. The important decision is whether you are comfortable staying at that level, rather than planning to lower it for one boss and immediately restore the previous challenge.

Check the warning before lowering the setting

The one-way Easy change was reported from a preview build. It does not establish that every retail setting transition has the same restriction, or that a particular save-management workaround exists.

Read the confirmation message before accepting a change. There is no verified release-build menu route or complete list of allowed upward and downward transitions. Do not rely on instructions that promise you can restore a higher setting after the fight.

Keep the optional challenge separate

Sixty-Six Days is unlocked for a later run and adds a death limit. It is separate from the ordinary difficulty choices, rather than a normal mid-fight toggle.

The developers say the ordinary difficulties can be used for Platinum and achievement completion. You therefore do not need to choose the optional death-limited challenge simply to pursue those rewards.
