No. The 66-day premise does not impose a mandatory gameplay countdown on your first playthrough. It describes Soul’s condition in the story. A separate, optional Sixty-Six Days mode becomes available after completing the game and introduces a limit on deaths.
The first run is not a real-time deadline
You do not need to rush exploration because a trailer says Soul has only 66 days left to live. The developers explicitly separate that narrative premise from the initial playthrough’s systems.

The first playthrough does not attach a mandatory countdown to this exploration.
This means you can approach side routes and learn encounters without treating ordinary playtime as a shrinking 66-day allowance. The story still uses urgency, but that does not turn an evening spent exploring into a documented loss of in-game days.
Where the limit actually applies
Sixty-Six Days mode is an additional challenge, selected after the first completion. It uses Hellwalker-level difficulty and restricts how many times you can die. The number describes a death allowance, not a timer measured in real-world days.
Simply hearing about this mode does not mean you must choose it. It is intended for players who want an additional challenge after learning the game and acquiring equipment.
Choosing a first-run pace
Pick an ordinary difficulty that suits your experience, then explore at a pace you can maintain. You do not need to avoid optional content to protect an unannounced first-run countdown.
The optional mode is also not required for Platinum or all achievements under the announced rules. If your goal is to see the story or collect achievements, do not mistake the most severe replay challenge for a mandatory step.
